We may not need a special day to thank our Mother but we sure do need a special day to narrate the stories associated with her. I am sure we have all played dress up as children, where we wore something that belonged to our mother or father and would mimic them for fun. I have always mentioned I get my love for photography from her but never spoken of the fashion sense that I inherit from her. As a child, I was always perfectly dressed in fancy frocks, frilled socks and matching shoes for all special occasions. Looking back at my childhood pictures, I still see myself posing because my frock was fancy enough to just stand straight in it.
I still follow the same practice of wearing contrasting colors and a perfect footwear. I am still skeptical to step out if my footwear doesn't match my outfit. But one thing I realized while growing up is that, no matter how many pretty dresses you have... your mom will certainly have something that is more beautiful that you wish to wear. I have had so many occasions where I could not find something to wear from my wardrobe and eventually picked up something from mamma's wardrobe and seized the day. It is certainly a different joy to steal some outfit from the mother's wardrobe and wear it just like her.
Saree happens to be my go to, when I have instances to wear traditional outfits. So here are some fantastic saree's I picked up from my mother to look perfect. Oh, did I even mention the compliments I get when I wear her outfits... I often whisper thanks mom for saving the day under my nose.
I remember those times back in the day when we had these back to back family functions and events, and we had outfits to plan so her first response was "I am not wearing a saree". You know Indians and their way celebrating big life events is always doing it in a way that is larger than life. With these new trends of gowns, traditional one pieces or ghagras... saree would be the last option on my mom's list if she were to decide what to wear. Convincing her to wear one was certainly a task, my brother and me would be at it constantly because we felt she looked amazing. It is kind of funny because I somehow don't leave a chance to wear a saree ever. But inspite of very little fondness to wear a saree, she still has this amazing collection that she has acquired from my grandmas and while shopping her heart out. Sometimes, when her mood is right... she does end up slaying in some of those amazing 6 yards. We certainly loved to see her wearing the sarees she had for real than just seeing old pictures of her in it before we existed.
We are frequently mistaken for sisters when we are out in public, but look at her... how beautiful she looks! People get astonished when she tells them that I am her daughter, with that little pride in her smile. She is undeniably ageing gracefully.
Sometimes our lives are so busy that we don't find the time to go shopping for the right outfit, but hey mom's collection is forever to the rescue. So if you ever come across seeing me in a traditional outfit, its a high chance that it belongs to her.
So here's a thank you for always sharing your wardrobe along with all other things in life. To many more excuses to steal from your closet and looking just as gorgeous as you are... Happy Mothers' Day.
